This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Come election time, there are relatively few policies the politicians actually get scrutinized on. The economy gets all the headlines, alongside health and defense, as well as some eye-catching new idea political parties adopt to attract voters. However, rarely do specific policies at the micro level come under the spotlight, unless the media can spot inaccuracies or impending disaster with which they can use for a few inches of newsprint.

Practical implications

This paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Findings

Is the art of writing a good CV dying? Never has it been easier to bypass the traditional form of proving one’s credentials for work, with the Internet fast-tracking all manner of ways to show how good any individual may be at their work. Videos can show in real time someone performing their job; references can be emailed in an instant; online sites can host qualifications and recommendations; and there are even virtual badges and other accreditations that can be pinned to the virtual chest of any applicant. Surely, employers have never had it so good when it comes to recruitment.

Findings

On the face of it, taking pets to work seems at best to be an idea guaranteed to polarize opinion. On the one hand, some people love dogs and cats, and will gain great satisfaction and peace of mind from having their pets close at hand, or be able to interact with both others’ pets about the workplace. However, on the other hand, there are many people who simply loathe animals, or fear them, or are unable to go near them due to allergies. Having pets at work might work for some, but might not work for others at all.

Findings

What is cynicism? To the manager, it is a cancerous, evil flow of negativity that stops employees from getting on with the job they are paid to do; it is the holding back of a company on the rise; it is the contamination of enthusiastic, young employees with so-called wise words from more experienced members of staff. In short, it is nothing less than the almost willful sabotage of all the good things a company tries to do.

Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations.

Abstract

Findings In every office, every day, there are innumerable acts of sexism. The male manager opening a door for a female employee; the female director giving more encouragement to a female worker ahead of a male equivalent. Technically, these acts are discriminatory on the grounds of gender, and therefore sexist, but most people would defend them as simply part of human life, or supporting colleagues at work. Is this kind of behavior really sexism?

Findings

Portrayals of superiors in film or on television are rarely positive. Think about it for a second. The cliche of the boss or supervisor is of an aggressive male, barking orders at employees, showing barely any humanity and never satisfied by anything his charges do for him. Alternatively, there is the stereotypically “hard-assed” woman boss who is similarly unyielding or sometimes the other end of the spectrum is used, and a boss is shown to be slightly deranged or so ineffectual as to be rendered irrelevant by their subordinates.

Findings

Among the slew of apps that can be downloaded to our devices, many of them purport to help us to be more organized. Some of them organize emails or enable greater functionality in person-to-person communications; some help us identify tasks and move them across virtual boards until they are complete; some remind us to do things at a certain time or place. Many of these are used every day, with some being effective for certain people, and others helping another type of person. In the end, it seems to come down to what suits an individual.

Findings

What is the best antidote to stress? For those of us working in modern corporations, we see the impact of stress all too frequently. The CEO who ages before your eyes; the director who is over 60 years old and failing to keep pace with those 20 years younger; the over-reaching young executive sleeping too little and having much touch of caffeine and other stimulants. The result all too often is sub-optimal performance and eventual burnout – the exact opposite of what everyone involved would intend.

Findings

Should you teach an engineering student about Marxist interpretations of Jane Austen? Or a philosophy student about how to fix a broken leg? Well, unless you were desirous of an especially rounded education, then this would seem pretty pointless. However, it has been the lament of many specialists that mainstream education simply follows the paths established centuries before, and do not reflect modern needs of students. Could this also be true of the highly regarded Masters of Business Administration and the students paying tens of thousands of dollars to put themselves through it?

Findings

Mention the use of social media to some human resource management professionals, and from many you will hear dark mutterings of “distractions” and “waste of time”. Many people believe that while social media – or Web 2.0 as some describe it – offers opportunities for free advertising, promotion and customer engagement, it also allows employees to enter into non-productive activities online that contribute little to nothing to the bottom line.
